Service Learning Reflection #1

All of you should have completed, or are close to completing, your first service learning commitment. (Don't forget that you will be required to complete another 2 hours the second half of the semester!) While reflecting on this experience, please answer the following questions:

1. What did you do for your service learning commitment? Be specific.

2. Do you feel that this type of service is critical for the Shopping Bag? Why or why not.

3. Now what? What do you plan to do from here, including how will you volunteer for the second half of the semester.

4. Do you feel that this is a worthwhile activity?

  1. I helped organize and set up the Shopping Bag with the help of class mates.I mostly help behind the scene with Susan. The service learning commitment was fun and, i just helped wherever help was needed.I think we helped The Shopping Bag,in a lot of ways.First,we help the store accomplish some short, med and, long term goals. We can with new ideas, that i think will help the store in the future. I will try to volunteer more than i have before.I'm really for the next half of the project. The Shopping Bag activity was a great project. It make me feel good when i can help someone else with a dream....

  2. My group had a difficult time working out a time convenient for all of us to meet during the hours given for volunteering. So we decided to organize a clothing drive instead. We each were responsible for collecting clothing in our own way. I announced the drive at my job. The Shopping Bag is always in need of donations so I am sure our efforts are helpful. I would like to either attempt another clothing drive for the second half of the semester or volunteer on my own at the store. I strongly believe that any opportunity to serve in the community is worthwhile. I was always taught that to whom much is given much is required. This can be interpreted many ways but to me that means simply that success comes with a price. Giving back is a vital part of character building which in turn contributes to one's personal success.

  3. I voluteered pretty late in the semester, and it was very difficult me and a friend of mine to find the store but we eventually found it and helped place clothing sizes on the merchandise. On the next day we helped clean, it wasn't as bad as i thouht it would be. I realize that some of the cloths given to the store weren't great for selling, I well donate some more apporpriate clothing of my own, that I no longer wish to wear.

  5. As a part of my service learning commitment, I devoted two hours of my time to help with the shopping bag. I helped sort clothes as needed. In Addition, I help beautfie the building to attract customers as needed by simply cleaning windows. On the behalf the shopping bag's objective, I feel that the opportunities they give to college students to volunteer for the exchange of class credit and in addition the learning experience that come along with it.It is critcal that the shopping bag find people willing to devote their time without getting paid. Otherwise, thier objective could not be accomplished. As a result, I want to utlize my time wiser with the shopping bag , to actually learn how a business is runs. It benefits me and my career goals. This is a very benefical activity. It not only benefits the shopping bag but me overall!

  6. My group was responsible for organizing a clothing drive. We collected clothing that we would be able to donate to the Shopping Bag. This was very critical because the Shopping Bag can not operate if they have nothing to sell. For the second half of the semester I hope to be able to volunteer a lot of time in the store. This is a worthwhile activity for numerous reasons. I will be helping someone and also helping myself as well.

  7. I volunteered by myself on a wednesday mourning. I was asked to tag items that were left untagged and to sort out a couple of new product. For my next two hours, i hopefully will be working the cash register or offering some valuable customer a inexpensive piece of clothing. Even though this experience has been fun, I am looking forward to seeing customers shop around. This also is a worthwhile activity, great customer service work, along with a hobby occupying our nothingness time.

  8. When I helped at the Shopping Bag the first time, I accompanied two other students in tagging the clothes. The second time I volunteered, I accompanied a classmate with washing the glass cases, washing the windows, and sweeping a floor. I would consider my service critical because without labeling the clothing, the customers would have to waste time searching for sizes when they could use that time to continue shopping. I would also say that if the windows weren't clean, then people wouldn't be able to see inside the Shopping Bag to see some of the stuff to offer and plus, having a dirty appearance is unattractive. I plan to help out at the Shopping Bag in assisting the customers in finding what they are looking for. I definitely feel like this activity is worthwhile because I'm learning something through an experience and its helping building my credibility for different concerns.

  9. For my service learning project I had to put price tags on clothing. I think that this service is needed because people need to know how much something cost. The prices were very reasonable for people to be able to purchase them. By the time that we go back the shopping bay will be open for business and by that time we probly just be assistants for that day. It was a worth wild experience for me because I was able to work with my classmates and we made it fun by listening to music as we completed our task.

  10. My group had to put off the Shopping Bag for a long time because my work schedule would not allow me to go but one day on a saturday i got to attend. I help by putting the labels on the clothes. I think this work is critical for the Shopping Bag because they need help. I plan to attend the Shopping Bag this weekend and also take them so clthes that i don't were anymore.I do feel that this is a worthwhile event

  11. For the service learning project my group was responsible for organizing a clothing drive. With this we collected clothes individually and took them to the shopping bag for them to then sell. I believe this was an important contribution because they have to start somewhere with as far as where they will be receiving clothes from. Next semester hopefully I will have time to volunteer to work with them this time. This project is helpful in learning to organize while also helping others.

  12. Well unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to the Shopping Bag to help out voluntarily but I have been advertising the Shopping Bag and letting people know that there is place that needs donations. i wish I was able to attend so that I could look back in time and say I made difference in someones life.

  13. I haven't been able to donate as much as time as I would like to the Shopping Bag by volunteering this first half. After reading the blogs from my class mates, I am definitely planning to get involved. In the meantime, I have been doing volunteer work at a similar Clothing Bank effort at my church. I've donated items and helped organize them for families to be able to shop & find clothing. I think this is important to give back and it makes me feel good to help someone else

  14. I volunteered my time at the Shopping Bag center for my service learning commitment. My pivotal role at the shopping was to collect and organize clothing along with helping to maintain cleanliness in the store. It was critical for the shopping bag to recieve all the help that it can get due to the fact that resources are limited and employment is not an option yet. I will continue to support the shopping bag during the spring semester not because it is the right thing to do but because I recieve some self satisfaction out of volunteering.

  15. i am the only one out of my group that has been to service learning and it was an ok experience. the things we were doing was very helpful to the shopping bag. we soted and tagged all items and put them in a specfic place based off what they were. on the other hand i found it very boring because it was very quite and not enjoyable. I recommend a a radio for the next visit. i plan to go back and do alot more. also i volunteered at feed the children warehouse so this project has enspired me to do much more

  16. I didn't get a chance to do anything for my service learning project. I think this kkind of service is very critical for the shopping bag being that they are a non-profit orginization. I plan on volunteering the best way i can the rest of the semester. I feel volunteer work is always worth while.

  18. During service learning i was very committed I showed up on my schedule time and even put in good ideas to the service learning. I also labeled clothings, seperated clothing, and etc.I feel like I help by telling people about the Shopping Bag which will increase in the long and short term period. I will volunteer by decorating and keep the counting of the clothes. I will also improve my dedication to the Shopping Bag in the best way I could. Yes, it is a good activity because it can help you with your people skills and communication skills which you need in the business industry. I feel like everybody should consider in volunteering in a drive, daycare, or etc. so everybody can get involved in something that can help others.

  19. During my service learning project I have gained a lot of knowledge on how a store is run.So far I have tagged clothing, and helped draw up a new set up for the racks in the store. Also, I helped draw a few concepts up on a mural or picture that would be painted on the front wall outside wall of the store to make the entrence look better.

  20. My experience was different. I volunteered on the tsu service day and worked over by the on the edge of campus. When all the crews got there, we were faced with a daunting task of cleaning and entire pond/swamp of debris. I filled, easily, 3 bags of litter and plastic bottles, not to add the endless heaps of styrofoam that was every where. But at the end of the whole experience, when all the trash bags were placed into a huge heap, i felt like i accomplished something, i was happy about what i had accomplished, and realized volunteering isnt so bad.
